Less is More Ep2: Limitations (Resident Evil)
299 Megtekintés 34 E
Jill's campaign is too easy for me. Nowadays I only play with chris. The lack of big inventory space, bazooka and lockpick makes the game harder but more rewarding.
1) I've never understood the community of players that are hype'd about realistic features in game. The primary reason games are appealing, is because you are no longer bound to reality. You wouldn't play video games if everything they offered was available with out risk in our reality. In other words, realistic(limiting realistic*) games/features are over-rated in my opinion. ^_^ 2) I may be different from many others, but I find 'you' can choose what makes you feel satisfied. There are people who want to feel challenged, want to die several times in a game, or be punished to ultimately merit that 'victory'. Yet I personally think they are just limiting themselves of what is satisfying. If they wish to do that to themselves, that's fine --- but those who slight/bash others that don't hinder themselves from enjoying a game that might be perceived as easy is where it becomes ridiculous; carbot's brother wasn't bashing anyone, I was just referencing where the theme of tough games usually goes when people dislike them. 3) I have 4 brothers. Yet if you put a microphone in front of us and have us record audio. You will easily tell a difference. Yet the carbot brothers sound so alike, its wild to me.
I never played Resident Evil, but according to the video, it's like... Alone in the Dark, with more combat, less puzzle, and annoying save system? Is that right?
Didn't play RE1 at all, but I have the same feeling about third act in Diablo 2. Nearly everyone hates it and that means Blizzard did good job designing it - because noone would like to walk in jungles with dead ends and unfriendly aborigens and there is three different locations with that content and then dungeon with maze and then huge sewers where you can't find entrance to the next level till you walk over all the location.. It's just hilarious how precisely atmosphere is built. Boring jungles make you feel actually bored
Boy I would hate resident evil - that's too much limitations for my taste
the policy nowadays is "Less content, more money." yet most games follow a formula that really is samey but some time ago (I forget where) but someone said that games nowadays are made in a way that is easy to play, easy to get into, and easy to explain, IE Reviewers, then there are games that are enjoyed and praised by players but not so much by reviewers. so in the end games with less actual content are easy to review but are meh by players, then there are games that want to do something interesting are loved by players but fall into obscurity Of course there are common problems which in themselves have problems (Also these sorts of problems are a case of "One problem can be sorted out if learned"), like the argument between first person and third person, I like first person because well its more immersive for me but third person, well sometimes when i played just cause 3 the camera would enjoy getting caught on something Also when it comes to "lets players" or "Reviewers" there is something that I call "Lets player tunnel vision" where the player's mind or sight are reduced, and then they die and blame the game but really they were given a warning and ignored said warning
So what you're saying is to call the cleanup crew and bring out the hedge clippers for the next family reunion, again!?
Spoken like an old fogie who only enjoys NES hard games lol
You are the first person in a long time that I heard say they liked RE5. Everyone bashes the game like it the worst thing ever. I really liked RE5 and its coop so much. Granted it wasn't a true survival horror but if you stop looking at as a bad survival horror and looked at it as a coop action game, it was a blast to play with friends.
What was Carbot's take regarding the RE2 Remake?
I wonder if carbot will do one for NieR series
Video content: Less Is More Sponsored Ad: _More_ Is More
I'm most intrigued by the limited save game ideology. There was a point in gaming where game saves literally only existed because the designers knew the game could not be completed in one sitting. They weren't do-over insurance in case an encounter went bad. Or even sub-optimally. "Oh I wasted too much ammo in that fight: reload!" "Oh I didn't get the good drop from the boss: reload!"
Cheers!!! 🍻
100% correct RE 1,2,3 is the RE must look like
You should try Alone In The Dark: The New Nightmare. If you like RE 1, 2 and 3, you probably will like it too.
Ya should do this on the new FFVII remake ^_^
I'd put a dislike solely for trying to devalue the Doom(2016), the best and the most challenging FPS we have to the date. When you would finish playing it on "I'm too young to die" i'd with great satisfaction watch how the first basic unit types of the game would fuck you in the ass like a train right on the second big fight(like 4 minutes into the game)on Nightmare difficulty I'm not even talking about Ultra-Nightmare because you would not to manage to complete the first two levels without dying. So yeah try to call it a fastfood gaming again. Though i support the general thought about limitations with a remark that there's different type of limitations. Regarding Doom it was a 1. Stand still and you are dead 2. There's no place to hide
Drunk carbon :3 and by way Doom 2016 has good difficulty levels were supplies and ammo dont help you at all.
This fucker didn't play the great Doom on anything except i'm too young to die. Doom2016 is the best and the most challenging FPS to the date. Period.
Great Carbot Video!!!
Jup. Resident Evil 1 is also in my Top5 for now. (will probably still be in my Top 10 in the next few years)
Carbot: I'm so frustrated in this game I LOVE IT!
Loved RE1 💗 To get that achievable/unlock by completing with no more than 2 saves was insane fun. Doing it without saving AT ALL was MURDER! ..........🤗=☠ (Yes. Hugs are literally death.) AWWWWWWESOOOOOOME!!! 😎
Ahh, a man of absulte culture.
So, did I just get through an entire video emphasizing tight, limited design and gameplay, the health food of gaming, to then be ADVERTISED the epitome of "junk food gaming", a MOBILE GAME? WTF is life.
This is my favourite video on youtube. u w u
Totally different game but this is the same reason I've come to fall in love with escape from tarkov
hufrom.info/number/vide/qICTpa-ZkKuWm6Q
Man, you did so well, but then you said "limited saves are good" Just because they are in your game doesnt mean it's good. How do you balance that for worse players? You force them to play for longer without saving, making it more frustrating for those who are already struggling, while skilled players or replays have it too easy. How about typewriters (fixed saves) with ink (infinite uses). It's bonfires from darksouls.
Can confirm limited saves are good no matter the skill level or time commitment. Took me about a year to finish my first play-through and it was amazing to the last second! Those who disagree should stick to RE6.
Cant agree more with these points. Except the locked camera angles. I really hate those, and they totally break any immersion I might have in a game. Not being able to see what is right in front my character, simply because the camera do not point that way. Being killed by a monster right in front of you, which just happened to be in the blind spot between two camera angles, is not fun to me. It feels more like I am fighting artificial game mechanics than the enemies of the game. All 'positive' effects by having locked camera angles, like being forced to listen when entering a room, simply because the camera angles deny you the use of your eyes, can be achieved in other ways. The room could be dark, the danger could be hidden from sight, fog, invisibility, and so on. I much prefer how games like Alien isolation achieve the same effects, without enforcing camera angles.
Seriously Doom? Did you even play the game?
The problem with limited saves is that it's kind of, unethical in terms of games design. There's many instances where limited saves in a game effectively punishes a player for having a life outside of the game, forcing them to choose between the game or things that are actually more important. Single parent raising a baby having some brief me-time with a game while the baby is napping, but then they wake up and need a diaper change and other stuff? Well sorry buddy, this game has limited saves! It's either let go of your last thirty minutes of progress and have to do it over again the next time you get to play, and who knows when that will be; spend one of your precious and finite saves so that you won't lose your last thirty minutes; or worst, leave your child to suffer a while longer so you can get to a more decent point of progress to make that spent save more worth it. That's just one specific kind of example, but it's barely scratching the surface of possibilities. With the limited technology of yesteryear there was at least some justification on the game's part to be less forgiving about when and where you can save, but with today's technology there's really no excuse for that anymore. Let us save on a dime whenever we want, as many times as we need; don't try to hamstring our ability to enjoy the game as a game for the sake of, "muh difficulty".
Yeah, saving isn't a commodity in modern gaming's landscape; *it's a necessity*. I can somewhat get behind only allowing saving in savepoints like JRPGs tend to do, but saving as a limited resource? That's unreasonable.
That dumb angle.. if you liked it.. you are not normal.. even if you get to mansion for first time you use your damn eyes...
Best
i dunno what is worse: the game or movie
yeah no... plz stick to the animated stuff
RE7 basically showed how many people still love horror, and the mechanics of inventory limitations. Although it wasn`t as hard as RE1 I think... it still was much fun
the Fatal Frame series was another favourite of mine that also used fixed camera angles, it can add so much to the atmosphere of a game
"To get to the toilets, you must turn the gargoyle's head, then find the painting, then trade it for the gemstone, then WHAT ARE YOU DOING ? -PISSING OUTSIDE !" "I want to take that magazine, but i already have 3 KEYS !"
Fortunately, the Carbots of old got eaten by a Carbots Zergling that somehow traveled back and found itself in RE2. The following time distortion not only got us this video, but also caused the FIRST Dead Space game to exist.
It's interesting to hear the addage 'Less is more' applied to games. In writing, it means "Choose your words wisely." A sentence with a few well-chosen words has more impact than 'word soup'. Good writing doesn't mean long sentences. It means getting the most out of them, avoiding repetition, making the reader feel their time has been respected. Only tell them enough so they can figure things out. Don't hold their hand and talk to them like they're toddlers. I compare it to eating crab legs. Good crab legs net you plump pieces of crab meat as the reward for shelling the crab. If you went through all that work and got a tiny scrap of meat? You're gonna be pissed. No one likes specifically likes shelling crab, they like the overall experience of eating crab and the obnoxiousness of having to shell them is a part of the experience. Like the glass of water example used in this video. Thirst can make water taste better. In RE1's case, the less is more comes with the game's simplicity and limitations, but you're rewarded with satisfying payouts. Even when you backtrack through an area you've been to before? Your brain thinks "Oh. I'm safe here. I've cleaned this place out," then Resident Evil kicks you in the teeth with a surprise. The Gamecube remake even gives you a resource to burn zombies so you know they won't come back. The only other guarantee outside of that? Exploding a head with a lucky crit. Generally speaking, I hate punishing mechanics for the sake of being punishing-- but RE1 doesn't waste it. It does it to set the tone. The reason those limitations are there? Because that lack of comfort is a big part of resident evil's appeal. It wants you to feel weak and vulnerable. The antithesis is Devil May Cry. There's nothing wrong with not liking this approach. Resident Evil isn't for everyone, but those that play by its rules are in for a unique experience.
I don't want to be sarcastic, but I can't help thinking Blizzard going "Less is More!" so they keep nerfing down Goliath and Dragoon AI.
Bro! Best game ever
when resident evil become an visual novel? i am not complaining, this video makes me realize that is true how every bullet, every save has his consequence, i hate it... i love it. sorry for bad english XD
Good point makes me want to play even though im not good at the genre
I have to disagree / agree with some points here. I mean yes limitations brings brain into the room. But sometimes it just annoys the shit out of you. Speaking of which: 50% of Resident Evil 1 are doors :(
Did I get the wrong channel?
Always nice to see genuine love for the older Resident Evil games!
Doom is a damn good game though. It just doesn't push a playstyle of conserving everything. It wants you to use all of the guns, it wants you to remember, when you run out of ammo, you can literally just chainsaw them. It's an homage to gore and brutality, with small challenges and appropriate rewards for exploration and creativity in ways to slay. I get that it doesn't exactly push the less is more point, but much like one punch man, it just excels in the excessive. And with how surreal it is, it could easily lose interest, but with how satisfying the weapons and enemies are designed, whether it be pistol or railgun, imp or hell guard, they are all satisfying, especially since glory kills were added.
I'm starting to believe carbot family are actually cartoon characters. Maybe secret children of Jessica and Roger Rabbit.
And you suddenly realise your are controlling the ultimate BOW Jill Valentine and the WMD Leon Kennedy.
Hilarious. Excellent video man.
I totally share your opinion dude ! I had the luck to play the first Resident Evillast one year ago and i totally fell in love with licence ! I just enjoy so much the lore and the gameplay. I was already knowing RE6 and 7 but I was just like ''yeah, there quite fun'' but the adrenaline that RE1 gave me was just delicious ! With RE2 and RE3 remake i was telling myself ''Wah ! Leon is so cool ! His relation with Ada is funny and tragic at the same time'' ''Redfield's Brotherhood are so overpowered'' ''Jill is so an epic action woman''. And then I discover i tried RE4 on GameCube (RIP separate ways) And my innerself have just blew up. It was so epic/horrific i just couldn't hold so much quality. And here we are, with probably the most massive boner when RE8 would be out.
Great vid! Less is more has always been a great method for increasing emotional investment.
first point from 0:44 to 1:30 really sums up YT in a nutshell, good lord i do wonder how wonderful Yt would be right now if google didnt buy them out and gut the site of all that made it great in favor of limiting everyone and everything.... who here remembers PMs being like a easy simple private email/txt system, who remembers customizing your own channel backgrounds etc. who remembers the bulletin board? i realize some of what i mention exist to some extent today but not in the free way it used to. much like modern games are shadows of their former selves. i digress. in my experience a pitiful 21yrs. Tv series and Movies generally 1-3 depending on the company and story being told. is the "magic" number b4 something starts going way off course or diluting itself however you wanna phrase it. (few exceptional shows/movies stay true for as long as 7yrs/seasons/iterations.) for Games fortunately it's more varied with good series lasting somewhere between on average 2-4 with the higher end being 5-7. not counting remakes. same for movies/series. anyway sorry for the tangent just sets me off with how desecrated entertainment has become. Indie scene gives me hope. also speaks volumes about the passion n ideology behind older creations such as R.E and most the the dozen or so original consoles games (first consoles i.e Atari to ps1/N64/Gameboy etc.) bottom line true passion projects with fun and not addiction or money in mind. things ppl literally poor blood sweat toil n their soul into... are timeless classics ageless etc. again i digress nostalgia does that ha.
I'm convined that "Carbot's Brother" is actually just an alternate identity of Carbot that he slips into sometimes. That's my head canon.
sounds like youd be a great Dark Souls fan Carbot - you should give the first one a try if youve never played it
Plats vs zombies lol. The plants are the healing herbs and the zombies are... well the zombies
nice to see these videos re-uploaded
“When I first played it, every room I entered was followed by this: -LETS PLAY RAID SHADOW LEGENDS! Me: “What? Oh.”
Lol same here!
It's nice to look back at this old video that still holds to this day! ^^ Now, I do like having a lot of options, more characters, more playstyles, more customization, etc. But I'll have to bear in mind that what makes some of our classic games so good is because of what their devs have made with limited technology, and like you said how games become more challenging and reward by giving you little to work with as long as it's fair. Limitations do have to be carefully balanced, but if done right can provide a challenging and rewarding experience.
I can agree that limiting players control over his character in horror games is beneficial. However the way Resident Evil did it, using fixed camera angles, is just weirdly unrealistic. It would be better to make a game about handicapped hallucinating cripple with vertigo fighting against zombies :)
Strongly disagree with limiting saves. I hate re-doing too much of a game, as I do not find repeating everything again fun (especially in a linear game). ...Unless it is a rogue-like mechanic, then it doesn't feel like re-doing (as things are generally different the next time around).
@Aaron Dona It can be, yes. But my opinion is that limiting saves is not fun (under most circumstances).
@m4a44 Of course not, but Resident Evil is a horror survival game, and that is part of the experience.
@Aaron Dona Not everything has to be "scary" to be fun. Some other people might find it fun, but I don't. Especially when the game has cheap shots.
Nothing is scary if you have autosaves. Without consequences, you can just breeze through anything, eventually, with enough tries. While the inconvenience is a shame, it's probably the best way to actually make you afraid to die.
I liked the 5th one
Funny enough, I hear some of the same things from escape from tarkov veterans who want to make the game more about risk vs. reward, have rewarding loot when you get it because it's super rare, etc.
Nice video man. Some games with some of the mechanics u like: -Ocarina of time (Majora Marsk 64) fix camera, reuse places. -Dark Souls (all): 80% Risk. 20% Reward. Game saves all the time so if u make a mistake u must live with it. -Silent Hill (the old ones are like the old Resident Evil) There many more probably but I only played these. Haha
Carbot seems more drunk than normal in this video xD
I'm pretty sure thats his brother. I don't fault you for mixing them up though.
loved it
LOL this reminds me of the nerd from Robot Chicken
Mr. Carbot, this is quality content, please continue this series. I wonder what else you have cool opinions on.
1:16 This section made me think "Hm. Did you give Resident Evil 7 and the 2 Remake a try?" Edit: Nevermind. Missed the opening.
@Yenai I did not. I looked away during the opening moments.
0:10 Did you even read what was on the screen?
Wish Metroid was in the hands of good people and not that sexist shit Sakamoto. Less can really be more and it is something many companies like Square lost a long time ago. Resident Evil isn't something I enjoy but it is good it exists. That said... Doom of all the ones to choose man?
Star Craft
This ain't my best friend :'(
I would assume his response to your statement would be "No, but I'm his brother. Any friend of my brother is a friend of mine!"
0:56 I will setup your blog and setup it to earn money w h a t s a p p +7 9 6 7 1 5 7 0 5 8 1
Donkey Kong Coutry 2 also charge you money to save. Its not as limited as inc ribon but still.
Maybe go a bit lighter on the slurred speech voice? Half the time I couldn't even understand what you were saying when you use it.
Somebody understood how do every 5 seconds connecting between themselves in this video?
Baby carbot!! 😂 Not too different from the current adult one!
It's his brother actually. Carbot sounded just like today back then.
At last, a new sequelitis
as much as i hate limitations and small inventories i got to say games dont compete anymore to the struggle to relieve feel we once had, we had to earn everything! was hard but great, games give you everything these days
@6:09 I've noticed with the limited space this usually ends up being pick up item-> run to box-> drop item-> cont game with what is need. Rinse repeat for every extra item found not counting then "my precious syndrome." were players who have not played the game won't use shotgun ammo in tell absoluity needed which is usually go into find a harder monster in there die, load bring shotgun.
You're probably right. This is how I played it but it was in easy/medium difficulty. If you play survive mode it's become really important to think about what you want to keep and what you can allow your self to carry on.
Yea give me more of this
2:27 thanks for reminding me to drink water, I haven't drink any of it two hours ago as I am working on my project.
saving is a compulsion for me, i usually save 2 sometimes even 3 times when i reacha save point. games that actually limit my saves are my nemesis and i wont touch them. i can appreciate roguelikes that autosave your save file with parmadeaths and panalize you if you exit without properly saving tough. i remember recently playing a game where i wasn't allowed to do stuff like talking to npcs, keeping the loot or even using the run button outside of missions wheen i just started and i had to earn my right to do any of those by advancing the story and earning 'contribution points'. i think earning those rights this way made me appreciate them just as much as starting limited would have and it also doesn't hold me back later in the game when i am in big boss fights and having the right to upgrade my weapon to level 10 as well as the right to loot the high rarity items needed to do so is crucial.
👏👏
I pretty much agree with all the points here in the video. I go into a similar rant when I start talking about Dead Rising 1 xD
DR1 was the best of em all
starcrafts!!!!!!!!!!!!! i need starcrafts!!!!!!!!!!!! :v
This is absolutely brilliant, I've been waiting soo long for this reupload; and honestly, the waiting was well worth it!
Love these assessment videos! Quality stuff!
You are the king of lockpicking
My friend...Know this well...that ..there is no "Noble" succubus..... lol
Resident evil 5 best
Oh, man. I need the rest of these videos.
This sucks.
@Nathan Medwin it's rather a shitty rock than a pearl.
Pearls before swine
Careful, the industry really would love to push the Less is More perspective, except Less Content and More Money
William White they already did.
sad but true
I totaly agree RE 1 WAS GOLDEN, now all new this type of games are more or less braindead pew pew games without content
Think they left this stuff back in Revelations, last only seen sneaking up during Umbrella Corps. But the new mainline games are returning to roots.
Yeah RE Content!
Cool
